The RDA network has 3 initial tasks:

  • 1. Advise on the role and functions of RDA and improving the engagement of regional communities, regional development organisations and local governments with the Australian Government (by 31 August 2008).
  • 2. Advise on principles and priorities for the new Regional and Local Community Infrastructure Program (by 31 October 2008).
  • 3. Advise on priorities for the types of local community infrastructure that could encourage economic development (by 31 October 2008).

The RDA Interim Board met with Parliamentary Secretary the Hon Gary Gray AO MP at Parliament House on
15 September to present its report summarising the outcomes of the first task.

Other consultation processes currently underway are also informing the Governments consideration of the future role of RDA.

Following the Regional Development Ministerial meeting in Broome on 30 July 2008, where Ministers agreed on principles for closer alignment of regional development structures, the Parliamentary Secretary and Departmental officials have been speaking with States and Territories about the practical opportunities for more closely aligning RDA with their regional development organisations.

Potential synergies between the work of other agencies and the RDA network are also being explored at bilateral discussions between departmental officials.
